Deep tissue massage is een vorm van massage waarbij diepe druk wordt toegepast om de diepere lagen van de spieren en het bindweefsel te bereiken. Het doel van deep tissue massage is om spanningen en verklevingen in de spieren te verminderen, waardoor pijn vermindert en de flexibiliteit en beweeglijkheid van de spieren verbetert. Deep tissue massage maakt gebruik van technieken zoals kneding, drukpuntmassage en frictie.

Deep tissue massage kan worden gebruikt voor een breed scala aan klachten, zoals rugpijn, nekklachten, schouderpijn, tenniselleboog, stijve spieren, beperkte mobiliteit, spierpijn na een intensieve training en stress. Het kan ook worden gebruikt als ondersteuning bij het herstel van blessures en het verbeteren van de algehele gezondheid en welzijn.

Het combineren van deep tissue massage met cupping heeft extra voordelen. Cupping massage bevordert de bloedcirculatie en helpt toxines gemakkelijker af te voeren. Deep tissue massage is ontstaan in de jaren 30 in de Verenigde Staten. De oprichter van de deep tissue massage is een osteopaat genaamd Dr. James Cyriax. Hij ontwikkelde de massage om pijn te verminderen in de diepere spierlagen en om verklevingen in de spieren te behandelen. Zijn methode was gebaseerd op de osteopathische visie dat veel pijn en beperkingen in de beweging van het lichaam worden veroorzaakt door verklevingen in de spieren, pezen en fascia.
